Baja's Unknown Takes Toll on G&R Racing
Mesa, Arizona (March 14, 2007) When G&R Racing rolled their Ford F-150 Trophy Truck off the trailer in downtown Ensenada, Mexico on Friday morning, all systems were go for what was expected to be a short sprint for endurance athlete and off road racing's young gun, Garron Cadiente. Both Cadiente and his teammate, Ron Whitton, had been in Baja prerunning the SCORE Baja 250 throughout week and confidence was brimming in the G&R Racing stable. That all changed in a split second as the No.38 Geiser-built FORD race truck tangled with a dump truck skirting the race course late Friday afternoon. "The team came together and wrenched all night in order to put my freshly prepped truck on the start line early Saturday morning. They worked tirelessly, replacing bent tubes, shocks and steering components. We took a hard hit very close to the race, but the guys really put together a winning effort just to get the truck to the start line," remarked a sore Cadiente. The short race saw both the No.38 and 39 G&R Racing race trucks get around the 215-mile race course without any major problems. Cadiente's bruised race truck was fitted with spare suspension from his prerunnner and the setup was different than his race setup, barring him from racing at top speed. Claiming the 10th position in a field of 30 SCORE Trophy Truck starters, Garron continues to stride in search of a SCORE class championship. Cadiente explained,"Baja has been difficult for our team. I'm more than disappointed with the events leading up to the race, rendering the race truck in less then perfect race condition. The team showed tremendous depth in repairing the truck from the pre-race accident and we continue to build character and gain experience while racing in Mexico. We still have four races to go and the two biggest races of the season, the 500 and 1000, are still to come. You can be sure we're charging hard towards the balance of the season." Succumbing to a rear end failure, off road racing's, "Fastest Grandpa" railed his No.39 race truck through Baja's challenging terrain before being stopped by a faulty rear end. "My truck really runs fast. We were second on the road at the 100-mile mark and then had a mishap with the rear end. It's a shame, because the No.39 truck had it all together and we were racing hard until the rear-end let go," said Ron Whitton. At times during the past two seasons, the rigors associated with racing in Baja have stung the two-truck team, however that didn't deter Ron Whitton from capturing a third place finish at the SCORE Baja 1000 in one of the most difficult point-to-point races held on the planet.
